OVER the line or not over the line? There was England v Germany in football's 1966 World Cup Final and tennis star John McEnroe's infamous "you cannot be serious" outburst at Wimbledon in 1981– but now speedway's Poole v Scunthorpe Championship Grand Final can be added to the list of great sporting controversies! A dramatic night at Wimborne Road last week took the second-tier league title fight down to a nail-biting Super Heat, which ultimately hinged on whether Pirates' Zach Cook's excursion onto the infield to pass Scorpions' Josh Pickering took both of his wheels over the line or not. "There is no video or photographic evidence that he went over the line. If they can show me the proof, fine. There has to be video or photographic evidence, 100 per cent proving the fact," said Poole boss Neil Middleditch. "There is certainly one view where you see soil come up off his back tyre," countered Scunthorpe's David Howe. "So for me, that is him on the infield." Read all about it in this week's magazine...

LEON Madsen has been crowned European Champion for a third time, cementing his status as the top SEC performer following his ninth consecutive podium finish. Madsen emerged triumphant from a hectic finale to the deciding round in Pardubice to pip Poland's Maciej Janowski to the title by just one point. In this week's magazine, he reveals: "People shouldn't get it wrong – the European Championship is hard. It's competitive on a level almost like the GPs. Everyone wants to win it because it's an entrance to the GPs. People really race hard here and you have to be at the top of your game in every round. There is no room for mistakes. There are only four rounds."

BRITAIN has a new World Champion after the pieces of the Grand Prix puzzle came together perfectly in Torun for Robert Lambert on Saturday night. In this week's magazine, our new No. 1 reveals: "So many things go into it behind the scenes and have helped me get to this point. I'm sure Bartek has felt that all the times he has been world champion. Massive respect to him. It's still sinking in. I never expected or planned to do it. It kind of happened naturally and when it happens like that, it's meant to be. It took hard work to get here, but when things are rolling, they're rolling, and that just shows this year. Speedway is like a jigsaw and if you are missing a couple of pieces, you are not going forward. That's how it is, but I managed to put everything together and get it working."

THE biggest night of Robert Lambert's career awaits in Torun this weekend – with the world title on the line. The Brit faces off against Poland's six-time champion Bartosz Zmarzlik and Australia's Brady Kurtz who, like Lambert, is aiming to add his name to the World Championship roll of honour for the first time. It promises to be a memorable night at the Marian Rose Motoarena with Lambert already relishing his date with destiny: "I'm in a great position but this is speedway and anything can happen. I have already ticked off my goal of getting a medal of some kind. We will just go with the flow and see what colour that will be in the end. I'm sure there will be some suspense but I can’t wait to see what Saturday brings."

ROBERT Lambert is knocking on the door of becoming Britain's next World Champion – after surging to the top of the Grand Prix leaderboard with only one round to go. The Norfolk-born rider's purple patch of form continued in a rain-curtailed Danish GP in Vojens last weekend when he was declared the victor at the end of 20 races, a result which moved him one point clear of defending champion Bartosz Zmarzlik and three ahead of Brady Kurtz with just the final round in Torun to come. Full coverage from Vojens in this week's magazine, with Lambert revealing: "It would be nice to get the title next week but I still have a long career and I'll have other opportunities to take it if it doesn’t happen in Torun. I'm going to be very thankful for whatever colour medal I get. There is no pressure on me, there hasn't been all season. The pressure is on Bartek to retain it and Brady, after being so close last year, to try and make it. If I just do what I have been doing, I'm sure whatever the result will be, it will be a good one."

A DIFFICULT and troubled season for Oxford at least ended on a real high note when Sam Masters and Anders Rowe teamed up to win the Championship Pairs at Poole. In this week's magazine, we have full coverage from Wimborne Road, where the Cheetahs overcame Berwick duo Peter Kildemand and Nick Morris in the final. Afterwards, Masters revealed: "When you get older, you know how to stay calm in those situations. I said to Anders before the semis: 'Mate, whatever happens now, we have come this far – what's meant to be, will be. Do your best and if we win, we deserve it. If not, we've battled hard'. He seemed pretty calm before the semis and did well to hold third against Bomber and Leon."

AUSSIES RULE
MARK Lemon and Australia are celebrating their first World Cup success since 2002 after overpowering Denmark, hosts Poland and Britain to win Saturday's Final in Warsaw. And Roos boss Lemo was quick to acknowledge the contribution of an unexpected source: "We have to give some credit to British speedway. A lot of these boys have come over from Australia and started their careers in British speedway, riding the tricky tracks. They honed their skills and when it comes to the indoor tracks, they adapt to them very well. Some of the foreign riders only ride on billiard-table smooth tracks and big, fast ones. When they have to get technical, they haven’t got the skill sets and the complete package. I think that was proved on Saturday. I grew up in an era when Australian speedway dominated, with the likes of Jason Crump, Leigh Adams, Todd Wiltshire, Craig Boyce, Jason Lyons and Ryan Sullivan. I/m so happy that these guys have had the same feeling. We are on top of the world."
