IPSWICH have handed Edward Kennett an unexpected route back into competitive racing.
The 39-year-old, who has not ridden in either of Britain's top two leagues since a very brief appearance for Championship Plymouth in 2022, has joined the Witches as a 28-day replacement for Philip Hellstrom-Bangs. The Swede has recently served a suspension imposed by his home federation SVEMO but is now on the sidelines through illness. Kennett will make his Ipswich debut in next week's match against Sheffield on June 4 and brings a wealth of experience with him from spells with the likes of Eastbourne, Rye House, Coventry, Poole, Swindon and Lakeside. Ipswich team manager Paul Hurry said: “Edward has been riding in the NORA meetings and he has been riding grasstrack and doing quite well. Where he lives, he has his own little track, so he has been quite active on a bike. “The results he has been getting at Iwade have been quite good. I have watched him on the grass for the last three or four years, and he has been a frontrunner. But now he wants something to focus on and to get back into speedway. “If Philip is available after the 28 days, we can slot him back in. If Edward comes in and starts scoring points, we’ll have to reassess things. I am hoping he does score. Edward has been a really good rider in the past.”
