ANIKA Loftus has been making headlines at Edinburgh this season as the first female racer from Australia to compete in British league racing. In this week's magazine, we talk to the 18-year-old and her younger brother Jordy ahead of her National Development League debut: "Racing against guys can be tough. Sometimes when you come into the pits and you've beaten one of the boys, their dads will have a go at them. And you overhear it, which isn't always great. When I'm out there on track, we're all racers and competitors and I don't think gender really matters at that point. I do think there might be a little bit of an edge towards beating me from guys but I just give it back to them. It’s good for women in sport, breaking down barriers and everything like that. But at the end of the day I just want to be known as a good motorcycle racer rather than a good female motorcycle racer."

BERWICK newcomer Reid Battye admits he's been through the wringer injury-wise over the years – and his debut championship season with the Bandits has already ground to a halt following his recent accident at Shielfield Park. In this week's edition, the Australian reveals: "It's tough mentally but I've been through it before with previous experience with road racing where I've had some hard injuries and been in a lot tougher situations than I am now. You just go back to that cookie jar. I've actually broken my back before this. That was a much longer process. It was six weeks in a hospital bed and then another four to six months outside of hospital just recovering. That was quite hard. It was my back and pelvis. I've done both my legs, feet, collarbone. I've had a few. Yet I’ve only ever had one surgery, on my collarbone, the rest all healed themselves, which is quite good. It’s not a very old body but it’s been through a bit."

AS first nights go, the grand opening of Northampton can be filed in the 'big success' folder after the Foxes took to their new home track for their debut appearance at the Shaleway against Ipswich. A huge crowd welcomed the team and although they were unable to get the ball rolling with a win, there were numerous positives to be taken. In this week's magazine, co-promoter Paul Hunsdon revealed: "I think, overall, it was run well, the stadium people are used to that type of crowd and it was nice to show it could cope with that number of people quite comfortably. We have to give full credit to the track staff for the meeting itself. Firstly, to Buster (Chapman) and his team for getting the track laid and then for the work that the guys did on it after the initial practice session. They were working on it on the Wednesday and then it had to handle another practice session for our boys, which lasted over an hour in hot conditions on Thursday afternoon. So to then go and hold a meeting off the back of that shows how good things were for a brand-new track. There was nothing cracking or breaking up, we didn't see riders two-wheeling into the bends or anything like that."

THE new Speedway Grand Prix season is upon us – but will it be Groundhog Day once again or will World Champion Bartosz Zmarzlik's record-breaking run at the top of the tree finally come to an end? As the Pole aims to continue his phenomenal run into an astonishing fifth consecutive year, there is no sign of his hunger for gold diminishing any time soon, as he reveals in this week's magazine: "I love riding the bike and I love racing good speedway for my kids when they are watching. It gives me extra motivation because my oldest son Antek is starting now to ask me the crazy questions about why I am winning or why I am not winning – stuff like this. I really want to show him what Dad can do. My kids are a big motivation for me."
